2011 heralded the commencement of a deluge of international retailers to Australian shores, although this was nothing new to many consumers, with one in three Australians travelling overseas each year, regularly wandering the aisles of Zara and Topshop.
Equally, there was nothing especially unusual for the new arrivals, as the top 10 retailers globally operate in an average of 17 countries outside their domestic operations. With many retailers facing challenging economic conditions in local markets, there has been a clear drive to seek growth
opportunities overseas in countries with stronger economic conditions and growth prospects.
This has been particularly evident in Australia, where the influx of overseas retailers in the past two to three years has been significant and looks set to continue.
