Welcome to the May 2015 edition of The Retail Barometer.

To begin with, we will look at the latest ABS statistics. In terms of Total Retail, the original estimate for Australian turnover rose 11.1% in March 2015 and the original estimate for chains and other larger retailers rose 12.3% in March 2015. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 8.7% in March 2015.

This month we draw attention to the success of international retailer H&M who has reported a gross profit of $47.67 in Australia since 2014 with 4 stores set to open this year. Also, in the grocery sector, Aldi is looking to improve their product offering and store layout to bring new customers into the store, putting further pressure on competitors Coles and Woolworths. We discuss the success of H&M and the grocery industry further with Channel 9 & Channel 7 News respectively in later sections of this Barometer newsletter.
