August 2010 - Issue 28
Welcome to The Retail Barometer™ Newsletter
Dear Customers and Colleagues,
Welcome to the Retail Barometer for August 2010.
We wish we had some slightly “fitter” news to share with you on the retail trading numbers released for June. Unfortunately the effects of the post fiscal 09 incentives and consumer uncertainty leading up to the election are showing through in the retail sector trading results.
Our friends at Inside Retailing offer the following:
The fortunes of Australian retailers were worse than usual in June, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics monthly retail trade figures for June 2010 indicating a fall in turnover of 0.7 per cent on June 2009 in original terms.
The estimate for smaller retailers was even worse, with a 1.6 per cent decline in turnover in original terms.
Seasonally adjusted figures for June increased 0.2 per cent - the same as sales for May 2010. Turnover volume increased by 0.8 per cent seasonally adjusted in the three months to June 2010.
Household goods showed the largest seasonally adjusted growth at 1.3 per cent, followed by department stores and cafes, restaurants and takeaway foods which both grew 0.6 per cent. Other retailing increased by 0.3 per cent.
Decreases were had by clothing, footwear, and other personal accessory retailing which were down by 1.2 per cent, and food retailing, which experienced a 0.3 percent decrease.
