August 2010 - Issue 28

Welcome to The Retail Barometer™ Newsletter

Dear Customers and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Retail Barometer for August 2010.

We wish we had some slightly “fitter” news to share with you on the retail trading numbers released for June. Unfortunately the effects of the post fiscal 09 incentives and consumer uncertainty leading up to the election are showing through in the retail sector trading results.

Our friends at Inside Retailing offer the following:

The fortunes of Australian retailers were worse than usual in June, with the Australian Bureau of Statistics monthly retail trade figures for June 2010 indicating a fall in turnover of 0.7 per cent on June 2009 in original terms.

The estimate for smaller retailers was even worse, with a 1.6 per cent decline in turnover in original terms.

Seasonally adjusted figures for June increased 0.2 per cent - the same as sales for May 2010.
Turnover volume increased by 0.8 per cent seasonally adjusted in the three months to June 2010.

Household goods showed the largest seasonally adjusted growth at 1.3 per cent, followed by department stores and cafes, restaurants and takeaway foods which both grew 0.6 per cent. Other retailing increased by 0.3 per cent.

Decreases were had by clothing, footwear, and other personal accessory retailing which were down by 1.2 per cent, and food retailing, which experienced a 0.3 percent decrease.

Looks Who's Coming to Town!

Tired of the same old humdrum 'stack it high watch it fly'?

Bored with the same old retail strategy delivering the same retail results with a variance somewhere between two to 10 per cent up or down on any given week?

We all love a little bit of excitement and inspiration in our daily retail lives and when a worldwide player like Zara comes to town (finally!) we sit up and take notice.

Inditex Group (Euro 4 billion), owners of Zara, are serious players in the global retail market. Inditex has over 1900 stores in 76 countries across the world with a range of brands available to them.

Zara, a phenomenal fashion brand, has become known for some focussed and inspirational differentiators.

Retail 'Fitness' Tips

Customer Connectivity

I have a view that some of our leading retailers are very vulnerable to competition arriving from off shore retail - such as Gap and Zara.

That along with the revolution in online sales growth.

Both of these forces are transforming the world into one large global shop and some of our retailers will not be simply ‘fit’ enough to compete.

Let’s apply a simple test to that view. Think of some of the top retailers in our country. Now consider how many of these retailers have created exciting new formats, merchandising systems, brand representations or simply put, have reinvented their offer in the last five years?

Last week I started to list some 20 of our leading, nationally distributed retail brands and it occurred to me that their brands, fit outs, internal merchandising and internal experiences were pretty much the same in the year 2005 and in some cases as they were in 1995.

Why is it that innovation, exciting new formats and experiential retail invariably comes from new entrants to the marketplace?
