July 2010

Dear Customers and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Retail Barometer for July 2010.

Due to popular demand, we are looking to continue to refine The Retail Barometer including a slight increase in frequency. The new edition will include a new section called ‘Retail Pulse.’ In this section we will endeavour to bring you a shortlist of the biggest news items of the fortnight both globally and domestically in both physical (off line) and online retailing as the world of multi channel "in line" retailing accelerates.

What are the central conclusions as we survey the effect of lower consumer confidence, tightening of their spend and the heavy discounting that has resulted? Discounting is the current way of many retailers – educating a consumer to shop on price as margins and brand sustainability is threatened.  In this edition of the Barometer we will pass on some fitness tips to avoid that discounting habit and margin degradation.Understanding and fulfilling the customer value prop[osaition is key to being 'Fit for Business'.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the retail trade turnover for May last week and the results are yet again pretty uninspiring, even allowing for season adjustments.

  • The trend estimate increased 0.2% in May 2010. This follows a 0.2% increase in April 2010 and a 0.2% increase in March 2010.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate increased 0.2% in May 2010. This follows a 0.6% increase in April 2010 and a 0.8% increase in March 2010.
  • In original terms, Australian turnover increased 2.6% in May 2010. Australian turnover increased 0.6% in May 2010 compared with May 2009.
